A few tweaks to an already good game.
I guess the biggest cirticism against sports games these days is that they don't change So many of these games can be described as roster updates with a few tweaks to keep them fresh. Publishers of these games are in sort of a bind. If they make a game in 07 that works well, are they supposed to scrap it and make a new game for the next year, or risk looking like they are milking it by keeping it the same?
Unlike most games, sports games are eternal sequels. Most sequels in the game industry are rehashes. The main idea of a sequel is to cash in on the original's success and give gamers more of what they want. Some of the best sequels, do this and are not as panned as much as sports games are.
Tiger Woods 08 is a sequel in no uncertain terms. Much of what was in 07 is in this iteration. I liked 07. I didn't think it was revolutionary and I thought it had its flaws, but there aren't many options for golf on the consoles. I long for the Links series, if for no other reason than to add competition to the field.
I am not trying to say that EA Sports has not added some new features to this year's version of Tiger. Golf, unlike other sports, really doesn't need a new version every year because there aren't the roster changes other sports get. So, it behooves EA to freshen this game up in order to push sales.
The first big new feature is Photo Face. With this, you can upload a picture of yourself over the internet, or if you are one of the few who has the XBox camera, snap a picture of yourself. It takes a long time to then tweak the settings and it certainly helps if you have a profile shot, but my pic produced a decent version of myself. I think most people play console golf as themselves, so I see this as an excellent feature that is worth the time invested.
