There are plenty of character optimization options, something I think every RPG or pseudo-RPG needs. This is where I was reminded of KOTOR once again. The setup is similiar. Take this in no way as a bad thing. But, it's there. You can change every physical aspect of the character, though I struggled to make him look like me. Guess the 360's graphics aren't ready for me yet.
Now, on to the gameplay. This is no action shooter. You control a party of three from a 3rd person perspective, and much of the combat revolves around you tapping a few buttons. At least, that's how it is at first. You are usually grossing overmatched firepower wise, hence why choosing the right party for the right mission is essential. I like this challenge. I just fear it might turn people off initially.
The beginning will find you mashing your fire button in a vain attempt to mow everyone down. Then, you'll realize how fragile your character is and stay in teh background. What you need to do is control your characters and use their special powers advantageously. Again, very reminiscent of KOTOR. The combat has that sort of detached feel to it. I loved KOTOR, though I did think many of the battles were less exciting than they could have been. That game had lightsabers. This one doesn't. Takes a little away.

The production values of this game stand out. From menus to ambient sounds (like overhearing information in a conversation) it all works and works well. There is a certain polish here that you come to expect from a company like Bioware and they do not dissapoint.
The conversation tree is a bit frustrating, as there are options you can't access and you can never really know what you screwed up. Mission Objectives are also at times unclear. The map sets destination points that seemingly make no sense. The map could also use a little work, and you have to really pour over it to get the information you need.
While I am griping, let's get to the biggest gripe I have. This is set in the technologically advanced future. They have laser weapons, biotic upgrades, spaceships. Why in all that's holy do the elevators take so long to go up and down? I heard this complaint before playing and laughed it off. Then I played. God, are these things slow! They should make a patch to fix it, it's that bad.
In all, Mass Effect is a great game with fantastic graphics and a great story. The gameplay is good, don't take my complaints totally to heart, but it might turn off some adrenaline junkies. You will die often in the beginning until you get the hang of how this combat system works. If you are a strategist, then you will fall in love.
If you buy this game, make a commitment to stick with it. It has a lot to offer and tell, and you'll find yourself thinking about it when you aren't playing. To me, that is the true sign of a good game.
