In the return to 2D on Xbox Live Arcade, Worms is better than ever, but is it worth 800 Points?
Worms was a nifty little PC title that released originally in 1995. Featuring a 2D battle between two teams of worms armed with ridiculous weapons such as Holy Hand Grenades and exploding sheep, it quickly amassed a cult following that led to several re-issues and sequels for various consoles and the PC. Some of these were good and some were just horrible - particularly the 3D version released for modern consoles, but the basic core Worms gameplay is undeniably fun and addictive.

Therefore it's a perfect choice for Xbox Live Arcade.
Released about two weeks ago, this version of Worms may well be one of the best in years. It's a return to the traditional 2D style that makes it surpass the console releases of late and the inclusion of multiple options for setting up the worms' battleground is also a great addition. And, of course, many (but, sadly, not all) of the funny weapons are back, as are the worms' humorous comments and death animations.
The only complaint I have about this title is the price. 800 Microsoft points seems a little steep for a game that hasn't changed that much from its original inception and in fact lacks a number of the weapons that Worms players of old will remember so fondly.

Still, it's hard to rail against a game that is so fun after all this time. Even the demo alone offers a considerable good time and includes online play. You'll need the full version to unlock achievements, play with more than two teams, or battle in more than the one included environment, so players will have to decide for themselves whether an expanded worm war is worth the cost. I say go for it - this way I can smack you around with an exploding sheep online.
