Lately we have seen many games and gaming developers go the way of console exclusivity, or turning away from PC exclusivity. What is the cause of all this jumping ship? Piracy.
Piracy has largely been the reason for the multiple companies that have abandoned the PC-only market in favor of console development. EA made the claim that piracy had killed Madden for PC. Soon after FarCry creators CryTek announced they would no longer be developing exclusively for the home computer. They cited piracy as their reason as well.
Now another big title has jumped the PC ship. LucasArts just made it known that they would not be releasing their next tour de force, Star Wars: Force Unleashed, on anything but consoles.
But their reason wasn't so terrifying as the thought of piracy. Their reason? Cheap people with low-end PCs.
According to LucasArts: "[If we made the game for high-end PCs], someone with a low-end PC would have a watered down experience, they would have to turn all the settings down and it wouldn't be the same game. On the other hand if we made that game for as many people as possible then it's not taking advantage of what those $4,000 systems can do."
Isn't this what the PC market has done for years on end? Well, at least since the inception of 3D graphics cards. It seems a bit silly to axe out an entire market due to the fact that some are more prepared for a high-quality game, and others are not. Though I do suspect there is a bit more to the story.
This only deals another blow to the industry's feeling that PC gaming is in harsh decline, and with so many big developers and big titles leaving the PC arena, it may not be such a hard scenario to believe.
