XBLA Review Wrap-up

Switchball

Switchball is one of the first releases from relatively new game developer Atomic Elbow, and it proves to be a highly polished debut. It falls under the same umbrella as similar ball rolling puzzle games like Marble Blast Ultra, but throws in a unique twist by emphasizing the use of physics in its puzzles. The player is also able to transform the ball into different materials which has a direct effect on how the ball controls and how it impacts the environment. For example, a steel ball is slower and has trouble rolling up steeper inclines due to its weight, but it can plow through blockades and won’t be affected by blowing wind. Together physics and ball transformation lead to some complex and surprising puzzle that help separate Switchball from the rest of the pack.

Metal boxes no match for Iron Ball!

Something else that really helps Switchball stand out is the artistic direction that Atomic Elbow took with the game. The mazes of Switchball have an overall look of something dreamed up by Da Vinci which suits the game very well. One of my few complaints about the game would be that aside from a background swap and some additional maze elements there is not enough variety between the different worlds of Switchball. I also think that Atomic Elbow put a little too much geometry into the props and environment for a game that relies heavily on physics. For example; when trying to roll across the top of a crate (which should have four flat sides) your ball might be deflected off when it hits one of the trim edges or cross bars that decorate the surface of the crate’s side.

Sometimes rolling over the tops of boxes can be difficult due to the trim geometry.

Despite these minor flaws I found Switchball to be one of the better puzzle games based on rolling a ball around. My only concern with purchasing the game would be replay value. There are some time attack elements and leader boards that help extend the life of the game, but if you are not into that sort of thing you might find the game a bit short. At $10 I still think Switchball is worth the purchase, even if it doesn’t keep you coming back for more once you have played through all the available maps.

Score: 82%
